East Asia (Japan focus)

Bullet trains, vending-machine coffee, temples that whisper. The most reliable trip planning of any region.

If your bar for "smooth" travel is high, East Asia clears it. Japan in particular: trains run to the minute, you can drink the tap water everywhere, and the convenience-store food is shockingly good. Tokyo and Kyoto pair perfectly — modern intensity then quiet temples and machiya streets. Budget US$150–220/day, allow two weeks if you can, and aim for the autumn-foliage shoulder (mid-November) or the cherry-blossom shoulder (early April) for the best value-to-magic ratio.
